Program Description
The program in Foreign Language Education (Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish) with New York State Certification is designed to prepare teachers of Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, and Russian, Spanish language learners at the secondary level. Including a substantial field-based component, our program is based on communicative methods of foreign language learning and a reflective model of teaching, which incorporates collaboration with colleagues, students, and community. Our goal is to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers with a firm foundation in language, literacy, and applied linguistics along with an understanding of a range of second language teaching approaches that can be adjusted to suit the needs of different learner populations from diverse educational and ethnic backgrounds. The NYU Foreign Language Education program affirms the value of heritage languages and cultures and takes an additive view of second language acquisition.
